Arla to buy Yeo Valley Dairies
The dairy food giant Arla has announced a deal to acquire a subsidiary of the Yeo Valley Group, making the UK’s largest dairy co-op even bigger.
By acquiring Yeo Valley Dairies, Arla will be able to use the Yeo Valley brand for milk and cheese under an intellectual property license.
The Yeo Valley yoghurt, ice cream, cream and desserts business will continue to be run independently through Yeo Valley Group, which remains under the ownership of the Mead family.
Tomas Pietrangeli, Managing Director, Arla Foods Limited said: “The potential for future investment in range through this licensing agreement with Yeo Valley provides a significant opportunity to offer a greater choice to consumers at attractive prices.Our ambition is to encourage customers to trade up from standard to organic milk, butter and cheese, driving overall growth for organic across dairy categories.”
Tim Mead, Yeo Valley custodian, said: “Arla’s farmer-owned credentials are aligned to the values and ethos that the Yeo Valley brand is based on – “Supporting British Family Farms”. We have a long-held ambition to grow organic dairy in the UK, because at Yeo Valley, we believe that organic dairy is better for the planet, for the cows and for health.”
The agreement means that Yeo Valley will be well placed to continue its focus on strengthening its core business of yoghurt, desserts and ice cream while remaining independent and family-owned.
Completion of the transaction will take place following merger approval by the UK Competition and Markets Authority.
UK organic market highest ever after sixth year of growth
The Soil Association’s 2018 Organic Market Report reveals that organic food and drink in foodservice is up 10.2% to a spend of £84.4 million, the sixth year of growth. This equates to around £1.62 million being spent on organic in the catering and foodservice sector every week across the UK.
Overall, the report says, the UK organic market is the highest is has ever been and is worth £2.3 billion, growing 6% in 2017 and now accounts for 1.5% of the UK food and drink market.
Key foodservice trends highlighted in the report include:
• Spend on organic through Food for Life Served Here – serving meals in schools, hospitals, workplaces and visitor attractions – grew 20% in 2017, reaching £18 million; spend has more than doubled in the past two years.
• There was a 15% increase in organic milk supplied into foodservice in 2017 – over a quarter of all organic sales in the sector are from milk.
• The Organic Served Here scheme, which highlights organic being served on the high street, has doubled its membership since launching this time last year as an increasing number of diners look for organic when eating out.
Clare McDermott, Business Development Director at Soil Association Certification, said: “Foodservice is a growing market in itself, and although right now organic still has a small share in this industry, it’s one of the fastest growing areas of the organic market and there is huge potential to accelerate that upward trend as people put more and more value on knowing where their food has come from.”
Recent research carried out by Soil Association Certification found that half of those surveyed would be more likely to choose a restaurant that highlights its ethical and sustainable credentials, while 41% felt dishes described as ‘organic’ are more appealing. However, 67% believed it is not easy to determine whether organic food and drink is available, and 47% thought more restaurants should serve ethically or sustainably sourced dishes. According to the wholly owned subsidiary certification body, “The results highlight the growing demand for organic in foodservice: this is encouraging for restaurants and cafes already serving organic, but also demonstrates the opportunity for more food places to introduce organic to their menu.”

Southampton Harbour Hotel gets AA five-star status
The £25m yacht-inspired Harbour Hotel in Southampton has been awarded a five-star rating by the AA, only four months after opening.
The 85-bedroom hotel in Ocean Village is the only five-star hotel in the city.
Mike Warren, managing director of Harbour Hotels said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have achieved this recognition from the AA in such a short period of time post opening. It is testament to the efforts of the team led by Simon Maguire, the general manager, to deliver exceptional product and service to all of our guests and visitors.”
The hotel is the sixth in the Harbour Hotel portfolio and includes a rooftop bar, the group’s Jetty restaurant concept and HarSPA spa.
Eden Project submit new hotel plans
The Eden Project has put forward altered plans for the hotel it hopes to open on its site near St Austell, Cornwall.
Planning permission was granted for a 109-bedroom, £8.5m hotel last February with an opening date of April 2018.
The updated plan condenses two hotel buildings into one and reduces the overall size and visual impact so the structure blends in more with the landscape.
If the amended plans are approved, construction would be due to begin in November 2018, and the hotel would open in spring 2020.
The hotel would be funded by commercial and private borrowing. It is estimated up to 40 new jobs would be created.

Coffee and spirit producers go ape on new launch
Award-winning Hampshire-based producers Gorilla Spirits Co and Moonroast Coffee are launching Maraba Coffee Liqueur. Inspired by Gorilla Spirits company name and Moonroast’s coffee bean from Rwanda, home to mountain gorillas, £1 from each bottle sold will be donated to a primate conservation charity.
Maraba Coffee Liqueur will feature Rwanda Red Bourbon beans roasted at Chilton Candover-based Moonroast. Then Gorilla Spirits, nearby at their distillery in Four Marks, will cold brew the ground coffee to create the “deep, buttery chocolate flavours and a fruity overtone with a gentle coffee aftertaste” of the digestif. Maraba will retail for around £30.

Langham Wine and Purbeck Ice Cream make rosé sorbet
Langham Wine Estate are collaborating with Purbeck Ice Cream to launch Langham Fizz Rosé Sorbet. This new flavour is to celebrate 30 years of Purbeck Ice Cream and follows their ethos of sourcing local ingredients, in this case a sparkling rosé wine from neighbours Langham that gives the sorbet “a subtle taste of red fruits and berries”.

Dorset Sea Salt success
Portland, Dorset-based producer Jethro Tennant has got his hand-harvested Dorset Sea Salt into prestigious London sites after three months of trading.
The Chelsea Physic Garden and Kensington Creperie, among others, are both stocking the sea salt which Tennant started producing on the Prince’s Trust Enterprise programme.
Dorset Sea Salt is harvested on the Jurassic coastline and “rich in vital minerals and is a viable, healthy alternative to old-school table salt, that is laden with additives and anti-caking agents”, according to the producer.
Tennant said: “The reaction for the product from everyone who is part of the Dorset food and drink scene has been amazing. I’m very grateful for that.”
His objective is now to grow Dorset Sea Salt into “one of the UK’s premium salt brands…[and] introduce it into the finest food outlets and restaurants.”

Wadworth announce four new seasonal ales
Devizes-based family brewer and pub operator Wadworth have announced a total of 10 seasonal ales for 2018, including four brand new beers.
To kick off the FIFA World Cup, Wadworth will launch Studs Up, to be available throughout June and July. It has a 4% ABV and a “rounded, satisfying bite.” In a “nod to Stonehenge and Wadworth’s heritage”, Wadworth Game of Stones will then launch in August. The golden ale has a sessionable ABV of 3.8% and “is paired best with fatty meat, BBQ chicken and tomato-based Italian dishes to really bring out its hidden depth of flavour.”
As winter approaches, Wadworth will be launching both Red and Big Baubles. Tapping into American craft brewing, Red is a ruby American Pale Ale “bursting with pine and citrus aromas and countered by notes of earth, spice and berries, with a 4.6% ABV.”
Big Baubles is Wadworth’s new Christmas ale set to replace Dray Bells. With a 4.9% ABV, it “taps into the growing trend of fruited pale ales, with rich berry sweetness from the real cranberries that are added during the brewing process to produce its distinctive flavour and pale red colour.”
Jonathan Thomas, Sales Director at Wadworth, commented: “It is important to keep our range fresh, bringing customers the very best ales we can – and we truly believe we have done this with the 2018 range.”
Stroud Brewery offering vegan ales
Organic beer producer Stroud Brewery have announced it will make at least one vegan cask ale available to customers from now on.
