2018 set to be a record year for tourists to the UK
The national tourism agency VisitBritain are forecasting a record year for inbound tourism to the UK in 2018.
According to a VisitBritain report, overseas visits to the UK are forecast to break through the 40 million mark for the first time in 2018, reaching 41.7 million, up 4.4% on 2017 which is expected to see 39.9 million visits. Spending by overseas visitors to the UK is forecast to reach £26.9 billion in 2018, up 6.8% on 2017 which is expected to total £25.1 billion by year-end.
VisitBritain Director Patricia Yates said: “Tourism is one of the UK’s most valuable export industries. It is also a fiercely competitive global industry and these results not only demonstrate Britain’s continued ability to compete internationally for visitors, they are testament to tourism’s importance as a driver of economic growth. We are working with partners across the world to tell customers of experiences they can only have in Britain and encourage them to book a trip now. We have seen good growth this year from the US and China, and are developing new products that make it easier for overseas visitors to book and explore all of Britain.”

Arkell’s buys first pub in Tetbury
Wiltshire brewery Arkell’s has purchased The Priory Inn in Tetbury, its first site in the historic Cotswold town.
The Priory is the second investment in the Cotswolds by Arkells in the past year. They also purchased The Crown Inn in Cirencester and Rudi’s wine bar in Swindon in 2017.
Brewery chairman, James Arkell, said: “We are delighted to have been able to buy The Priory. Like The Crown in Cirencester, it’s a thriving pub in the heart of a busy town which already has a strong and vibrant community around it and makes a strong addition to our growing estate of pubs in Gloucestershire.”
The Priory Inn will be run by experienced Arkell’s landlords, Robert Goves, Martin Smith and Phillippa Swayer. It has 14 ensuite rooms to let, a large bar, restaurant and car park.

St Austell first with new filtration system
St Austell Brewery have made a six-figure investment in a new X-Flow filtration system, designed to make their beer clearer and more stable. They will be the first brewery in the UK to install the new system.
The X-Flow units from Pentair Systems in Holland make use of membranes to filter out the haze particles left after the fermentation process. Beer is fed through the unit at speeds of 1.2 metres per second or more and forced through holes 0.5 microns in diameter.
Already well-established in the wine industry, the X-Flow system creates virtually sterile filtration. Traditionally used in water purification, X-Flow is being seen as an alternative to the ‘Kieselguhr’ systems, which make use of filter powders based on fossilised fishbones to clean haze from the beer.
St Austell Brewing director Roger Ryman said: “This isn’t new technology, but it is certainly new to brewing. The Kieselguhr system uses primitive resources that are limited and hard to dispose of, so while the X-Flow has already been adopted by one or two of the largest breweries around the world, a lot of eyes are on us as an early adopter of the system.
“While investment in new technology always carries a risk, this is a proven system that will replace one that really doesn’t belong in the modern, more environmentally-friendly world and I predict that in 10 years time all beer will be made using the X-Flow Filtration System.”

Wickwar Wessex ditch plastic straws
The Gloucestershire-based pub company Wickwar Wessex are banning all single-use plastic straws from their managed pub and hotel sites.
A biodegradable straw made using vegetable extract, supplied by Vegware, will be available on request to customers.
Darren Earl, Wickwar’s head of operations said: “These changes mean we will remove almost half a million plastic straws, used annually across our business. This move demonstrates our commitment to helping to preserve our environment, by reducing the amount of non-recyclable plastic waste that we produce.”


Dorset brewery collaborate to launch new gin
Dorset craft brewer Gyle 59 are launching their own gin in collaboration with Devon Distillery. Gyle 59 Gin is produced on a mobile still housed on a restored VW Transporter van.
Jon Hosking, head brewer at Gyle 59, said: “The idea for the gin production was to use botanicals that Gyle 59 use in our beers, and so elderberries, honey, star anise, coriander, lemon peel and nettles were added to juniper, angelica and orris root and the alcohol re-distilled through the suspended botanicals.”
According to the producer, the “results are a surprisingly fruity but dry gin with just a hint of aniseed that many are enjoying. Try it with elderflower tonic; it really complements the flavours”.
The gin is available through their Cellar 59 shop and bar in Lyme Regis and online at gyle59.co.uk.

Swoon launch vegan flavours
The award-winning gelato makers will be introducing new limited-edition vegan options to their Bristol and Bath bars this January.
Made without dairy milk or cream, the almond milk-based gelati will include Chocolate, Hazelnut & Orange, Peanut & Almond Milk and Almond, Cinnamon, Date & Maple Syrup. These will join regular vegan flavours including the Great Taste award-winning Chocolate and Mango sorbetti, as well as Raspberry and Pistachio sorbetti.

Adam’s Chocolate go bite-sized
Bristol-based Adam’s Chocolate are launching a new range of two-cube pocket-sized packs for a “nutrient-rich treat on-the-go”.
Available in its Goji Berry & Pistachio flavour and Great Taste award-winning Mint flavour, the organic cold pressed chocolate has ingredients including yacon, lucuma and maca and is rich in Vitamins A, C plus iron and amino acids.
Each 22g pack of Adam’s Organic Cold Pressed Chocolate, which are Soil Association and Vegan Society certified, is available for retailers, wholesalers and distributors to stock, RRP £1.99.

Modular cold rooms bring New Year chill
The new Polar Cold Room range from Nisbets can help operators “significantly increase their frozen or chilled storage capacity quickly and easily.”
Suitable for indoor or outdoor operation they offer easy access to frozen goods and fresh produce.
Available in a range of sizes, the Class 5 units operate within ambient temperatures of up to 43ºC, ensuring they can keep up with the demands of a humid commercial kitchen.
The secure fully rebated door system comes with a slow-close mechanism which prevents slams, a self-closing function which makes sure the door isn’t left open in error, and a safety door catch which prevents accidental lock-ins.

New appointment boosts St Austell purchasing power
St Austell Brewery have appointed Andrew Holden as procurement director.
He joins the Cornish brewer from a similar role at the Eden Project where he cultivated the partnership between the companies that resulted in a supply contract worth over £250k per annum, Eden inspired beers and sponsorship of the Eden Sessions.
Brewery CEO James Staughton said: “It’s a proven fact that you can’t grow a company year on year without it creating stresses on supply lines and systems that were designed for the way we were. As we look at introducing new resource procurement and management systems into the Brewery, it is the perfect time for us to bring in someone with Andrew’s experience, both locally and on a wider scale, to help us manage our relationships with suppliers and create the best environment for us to do business with them.”

Cornish hotels gets new MD
Ben Young has been promoted to the newly-created role of managing director for The Alverton hotel in Truro. He will also continue to oversee sister hotel The Greenbank in Falmouth which he has been general manager of for the last four years.
He has more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry including periods at The Kensington Palace and Park Hotels in London and general manager at a number of four-star hotels in Cornwall.
Ben Young said: “I am delighted to be taking on the running of The Alverton in addition to The Greenbank in the new year. There’s a real synergy between the hotels; both offering high quality, genuine and authentic hospitality in beautiful surroundings, along with fantastic food, refinement and luxury.”

New executive head chef at Gidleigh Park
Chris Simpson will join Gidleigh Park as the executive head chef from the two Michelin starred Restaurant Nathan Outlaw.
The announcement follows the departure of Michael Wignall from Gidleigh Park, located in the Dartmoor National Park in Devon, after two years.
Chris Simpson said: “It’s a privilege to have been offered the opportunity to take up the reins at Gidleigh Park, somewhere I’ve admired since I very first started cooking.  Moving with the support of Nathan, I’m excited to be heading up my own kitchen and am ready for this next challenge in my career.  I’m also delighted to be staying in the South West, to be able to continue to work with all the great local produce and suppliers in our region, and I’m looking forward to working with the talented Gidleigh Park team”.

Hotel du Vin Exeter announces new general manager
One of the newest properties in the boutique brands portfolio, Hotel du Vin Exeter have appointed Fiona Dardé as general manager.
She has over 15 years of experience as a general manager and will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the hotel.
Nick Halliday, chief operating officer at Hotel du Vin, commented: “Fiona brings a wealth of experience with her to Hotel du Vin Exeter, one of our newest hotels. We’re delighted to welcome her to our team and seeing the hotel flourish under her leadership.”
